SEEING A GP

Your GP is open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and can deal with most urgent and non-urgent health problems.

Registering with a GP

All students should register with a GP as soon as possible when you get to St Andrews. This is especially important if you have a disability which needs treatment or can complicate your care.

The opportunity to register will be available at matriculation, but if you don’t register then, then the Student Health Hub can help you - email them on studenthealth@st-andrews.ac.uk. You should not wait until you get ill to register with a GP.

The GP you should register with is based on the letter your family name begins with: Pipeland Medical Practice for A to Nu, and Blackfriars Medical Practice for Nu to Z. You can change practice at a later date if you need to.

Both practices also have an online appointments and repeat prescriptions service you can sign up to. Details of how to sign up will be on their website.

If you have a long-term health condition, or take regular medication, you should make an appointment at the practice as soon as possible to discuss continuing your care. Call the practice and they’ll be able to organise you a pre-bookable appointment with a doctor, nurse, or at one of the chronic health clinics. Do not wait until you are running out of medication to do this.

Urgent health problems

Some urgent problems (like UTIs) can be dealt with by a pharmacist at one of the pharmacies in town. Other problems might require an appointment with a nurse or doctor and the GP practices keep on the day appointments available for this.

If you’re not sure who you need, or you want to make an on the day appointment, call the Student Health Hub helpline on 01334 465777 between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday. They will be able to advise you on what service is right for your ailment, and organise a nurse from the Student Triage Clinic to call you back if you need to see the GP.

Non-urgent health problems

Some health problems, like long-term conditions, or contraception do not need to be dealt with on the day. Both GP practices offer pre-bookable appointments for these types of problems, and they also run specialist clinics for some long-term health conditions like asthma and diabetes.

Both GP practices offer online booking services, and appointments for these problems can also be made over the phone, or in person at the practice.

Some non-urgent health problems, like starting the contraceptive pill, can be done by an appointment with the nurse. If you don’t know if you need to see a nurse or doctor, or go to one of the specialist clinics, call the GP practice or the Student Health Hub and they’ll be able to tell you what appointment to make.
